WEAR IS... SARAH ISENBERG?

Sarah Isenberg loves works of art so much, she's become one. From LA to New York, she brings her impeccable sense of style, inspired by the masterpieces she studies, everywhere she goes. She's known as @happy_tunes on Instagram, and it sums up much of what you can expect to find through her content: a beautiful harmony of bright and cheery outfits.

With such a cool factor at just 21, it's clear that there is so much greatness (and plenty more fabulous outfits) ahead of her. So stay tuned and in the mean time, keep reading for her thoughts on Amy March, painterly clothes and and Scandinavian swimmers.

Hi Sarah! Please introduce your wonderful self!

Hi! I’m Sarah and I’m a 21 year old art historian. As much as I hate people who self describe as bi-coastal, the term really has applied to me as of late. I was born and raised in LA, moved to New York last June (and again in January), but since the big Q hit I’m now back in LA with family.

1. How would you describe your personal style?

My personal style is seriously all over the place. I think the best way to describe it would be “if a picnic was a person.” I like long, flowy, Victorian-ish dresses, and am consistently drawn to patterns that have fruit on it, florals, and gingham of course! I also love a good jumpsuit no matter what.

2. Who or what are your current biggest style inspirations?

My style inspirations are always changing but I’d say my current ones are Amy March, Francoise Hardy, @thankyou_ok on instagram, David Hockney, Susan Alexandra, David Byrne’s big suit from “Stop Making Sense" and the Haim sisters (they went to the same middle school as me! But not at the same time.)

3. How did you discover your personal style or are you still discovering it?

I think that my personal style is and always will be constantly changing. I’ve always had a really strong sense of style and known what i liked (see photo of me in a mermaid dress and hard hat at my combined princess/bob the builder 4th birthday party). In high school i was really influenced by rookie mag, and that’s where I really learned not to care about what other people thought about what I wore (see flower crown / black lipstick phase in high school) and did a lot of experimenting with bold styles.

Rookie’s influence definitely made me more confident in my style and more unabashed in the things I liked even if it doesn’t adhere to a cohesive aesthetic. I think now, as an art historian, my style is very influenced by, well, art! I notice a lot of primary colors in my wardrobe, as well as patterns/shapes that are reminiscent of Hockney or Matisse as well as florals that take after Dutch still life paintings. I think there’s a very painterly quality to a lot of the clothes I wear too; swishy, flowy dresses, boxy structured tops and wide leg pants.

4. What's on your thrift list right now?

Right now, even though I won’t be able to wear it anywhere for a while, I am looking to thrift a good swimsuit. I’m pretty picky about my swimwear— I don’t really like to have my butt out too much and prefer high waisted bottoms. Luckily, my specifications are in line with a lot of vintage swimwear, so I’ve been scouring Depop and Ebay to find the perfect suit.

5. What's your go-to midnight snack?

My go to midnight snack is probably anything that you can buy in the check out aisle at Trader Joe’s like the Scandinavian swimmers, chocolate peanut butter cups or power berries! Also, ice cream of course, or shredded cheese straight out of the bag.

6. And the bonus question I like to ask everyone before they go: what's something you're really proud of right now?

Right now, I’m really proud of myself for having my undergraduate thesis published! I wrote it on the Swedish painter Hilma af Klint, (she is SO COOL google her if you don’t know her!!) and even got a grant from my school to travel to Sweden to interview people and learn more about her life. I put a lot of blood, sweat and tears into writing it, and loved delving so deeply into her works. Getting it published and out into the world makes me feel really accomplished and totally validates all the hard work I put in!

Wear is… Kelly Peacock?

Hi! Welcome back to Wear is She Wednesdays, a series that highlights one special girl each week to let her shine! Every Wednesday, we feature a different “she,” and get the scoop on her style, what makes her tick, and how the heck we can learn to be as awesome as she is. WEAR IS... KELLY PEACOCK?

Intelligent and poised, Kelly Peacock is living the Brooklyn dream. After moving to the big city, she quickly began pursuing her passion for writing, which she often shares with her growing social media following. And scrolling through her effortless (and often coffee filled) imagery feels like easy Sunday mornings and French elegance.

Her style dances within the realms of breezy minimalism, but don't be mistaken, there is nothing minimal about her talent and creativity. This writer is going places and we can't wait to see where! So keep reading for her thoughts on psych thrillers, fast fashion and writing poetry at coffee shops.

Hi Kelly! Please introduce your wonderful self!

Hi! My name is Kelly Peacock and I'm a Brooklyn-based poet and writer, doing content marketing and writing for Thought Catalog. I also do some social media content for brands, like Mejuri (#finecrew hi!).

1. How would you describe your style?

Definitely comfy. Trendy, cute, casual. I like to wear "girly" pieces like dresses and cute ruffled off-the-shoulder tops with little sandals just as much as I like to wear an oversized tee and biker shorts and Air Forces.

2. Where are your favorite places to shop and why?

I'm trying to shop more sustainably and less fast fashion. It's hard but it's making me a lot more conscious about things. Thankfully, I live in New York and there are thrift stores everywhere, but I can't rely on them for jeans that fit my body type, so for that, I typically go to Zara or Madewell.

3. How did you discover your personal style or are you still discovering it?

I don't know if there was a point when I discovered my style, I think it just came naturally and through influence from my friends and social media. There are things I like to wear that I know fit my body type and what feels like me. Whether if I'm wearing sweatpants and a crop top or a flowy dress, my style is really just whatever I feel comfortable in and most like myself.

4. Do you have any current favorite? (podcasts, books, songs, etc?)

SO MANY FAVORITES. I'm an avid reader and read a lot of psych thrillers, but my favorite books would have to be Madame Bovary by Gustave Flaubert and Call Me By Your Name by André Aciman--the writing in both of these are just..*chefs kiss*.

I'm also obsessed with music, specifically Harry Styles, The 1975, LANY, The National, Gregory Alan Isakov, J Cole, The Band CAMINO, Phoebe Bridgers. Let me just send my Spotify, haha. I've been trying to get into podcasts more, but I can't seem to stray away from Dateline, Crime Junkie, Killer Queens, Call Her Daddy, Up Schitt's Creek, and The Daily Show With Trevor Noah: Ears Edition.

5. Aside from style, what other hobbies or interests do you have?

I love to read. I love to watch Netflix or Hulu. I also love thrifting, writing poetry at a coffee shop, hanging out with friends at the park, wandering around the streets of Soho, and people-watching (these hobbies were all before quarantine).

6. And the bonus question I like to ask everyone before they go: what's something you're really proud of right now?

I graduated from college in May 2018 with a Creative Writing degree, and in November 2018, I moved to New York City and got myself a job as a writer. I still can't believe it--some days I have to pinch myself to make sure I'm not dreaming.

Where else can we find you, Kelly?

I spend a lot of time on Instagram (@kellyapeacock) and Twitter (@kellyapeacock), so you can find me there! I'm trying to post more of my poetry on my Instagram.

If you want to take a peek at what I do for work, feel free to read through things at Thought Catalog, thoughtcatalog.com/kelly-peacock, or on my website, kellypeacock.net.

WEAR IS... ROWAN HAUSMAN?

If you stopped believing in faeries when you were little, meet Rowan Hausman. Between her pixie-like features and overflowing heart, she's one magical girl on a mission to make this world a more sustainable and ethical place. Truthfully, if she sprouted wings and flew off to a home made of toadstools, I don't think it would shock any of us.

So, if you need some grounded energy and inspiration to plant a majestic garden, keep reading for Rowan's thoughts on Lana Del Rey, expressing your true self and her new plant based picnic service!

Hi Rowan! Please introduce your wonderful self!

My name is Rowan Hausman, aka Rowan Faerie. I’m located in East Hampton NY and I work in natural & sustainable skincare. I'm also in the process of creating a plant based meal service with local in season organic fruits & veggies! Hoping to launch this summer.

1. How would you describe your style in 3 words?

My style in 3 words would be comfy, earthy, and sustainable.

2. Who or what are your current biggest style inspirations?

My top style inspirations are Lana Del Rey and Free People looks. Lana has such a classic look and doesn’t fall for fast fashion trends. Her range of style if infinite. Free People have such great statement pieces and also fashion statements.

I don’t shop from Free Peeps anymore because their practices don’t align with my beliefs on sustainability or ethics..before I realized what a toll the fashion industry had on the environment Free People were my go to..now when I thrift I always imagine I’m shopping in a Free People so that I’m able to see the potential in pieces I would maybe walk past without noticing.

3. What does personal style mean to you?

Personal style can be a glimpse into your true self. Finding personal style that aligns with your highest self can help you hold space in the world.

4. What's on your thrift list right now?

Right now, #1 is kerchiefs! I love how versatile they are and they are a great way to accessorize. Sustainably made jewelry is expensive, I have a few quality jewelry pieces, so to make up for the lack of jewels I accessorize instead with vintage kerchiefs! I’m specifically looking for one with butterflies on it now 🦋

5. Who would you invite to your fantasy dinner party?

My dream dinner party right now would be filled with all of my lovely friends. Sharing a meal with the people I love fills up my heart. Maybe I’d add in Lana too since I think we’d get along quite well and I just know she would love my cooking.

6. And the bonus question I like to ask everyone before they go: what's something you're really proud of right now?

I’m proud of my developing plant based food business!

WEAR IS... HALEY WALKER?

Haley Walker is as bright as her wardrobe, in every sense of the word. Intelligent and vivacious, this business savvy poet is not only incredibly skilled at finding unique vintage, but can also style it in wonderfully playful ways you don't see coming! In just over a year, Haley grew her thrift focused YouTube channel to thousands of eager viewers and has created steadily growing success by selling vintage on Depop.

After having the absolute pleasure of meeting Haley in person and now calling her a friend, I can affirm that she's not only a joy to tune into online, but to be around in person as well. I can't wait for you to get to know her better too, so keep reading for her thoughts on jumpsuits, city living and truffle popcorn.

Hi Haley! Please introduce your wonderful self!

Hi! My name is Haley Walker--I'm a writer, content creator, and vintage seller originally from South Florida. I've spent the last two years in NYC pursuing my MFA in Poetry at Columbia and building my online slow-fashion empire. My next move is LA!

1. How would you describe your personal style?

I would describe my personal style as vintage maximalism. I'm drawn to bold colors and patterns, fun textures, and dramatic silhouettes. I've been really into 1980s vintage--things like silk jumpsuits and blazers with big shoulder pads--for the last year or so, and recently I've been getting into '60s and '70s vintage as well.

2. Who or what are your current biggest style inspirations?

My top three are probably Beth Jones of B. Jones Style, Alyssa Coscarelli of Alyssa in the City, and Hannah Baxter, my former boss and the Beauty Editor at Coveteur. All of these ladies love a bold vintage moment and are somehow able to make almost anything work with their individual styles!

3. How did you discover your personal style or are you still discovering it?

I'm very much still discovering it, but moving to NYC was a big step for me. Living in a city that is so forgiving of the antics of strangers definitely made feel comfortable trying out risky outfits. Also, shopping exclusively at secondhand and vintage stores has helped me figure out which pieces excite me without the bombardment of the latest trends. Thats' not to say I don't follow trends, though. I just try to pick the ones that I actually like and find them at the thrift store.

4. What's on your thrift list right now?

I want more puff sleeve tops! I think puff sleeve dresses are a lot easier to find, but I don't have the heart to cut them into tops. I also want a 1970s Gunne Sax dress. I'm into everything super feminine and romantic lately.

Haley Walker of Haley in the Details

5. What's your go-to midnight snack?

Popcorn all the way! I have this black truffle popcorn salt that is absolutely LIFE CHANGING. Also, dark chocolate pretzels.

6. And the bonus question I like to ask everyone before they go: what's something you're really proud of right now?

I'm super proud of my Depop store! The way things are looking, I will be able to do this for a living. I might eventually break out of Depop and create my own platform, but we'll just see! Oh, and I'm about to get a Master's degree from Columbia. I have a lot of imposter syndrome about that one, but it's certainly something I should be proud of.

Wear is… Amanda Halkias?

Hi! Welcome back to Wear is She Wednesdays, a series that highlights one special girl each week to let her shine! Every Wednesday, we feature a different “she,” and get the scoop on her style, what makes her tick, and how the heck we can learn to be as awesome as she is. WEAR IS... AMANDA HALKIAS?

Ambitious, witty, bold... these are just some of the wonderful words to describe Amanda Halkias. She's a woman filled with soul and an appreciation for things of the past. And in a daring feat of bravery, did the thing so many of us wish to do: left her career to follow her heart.

Amanda is now the proud owner of Helen the Brand, a vintage clothing shop with sustainable, artful living in mind. And with so many vintage gems to explore, scrolling through her curated collection feels just like treasure hunting.

Today of course, we have the pleasure of getting to know the woman behind the brand, so before going off to see what unique pieces you can score, keep reading for her thoughts on self evolution, granola girls gone glam and insanity.

Hi Amanda! Please introduce your wonderful self!

Hi! My name is Amanda Halkias, but my friends call me Mandy. I'm a creative based in Brooklyn, NY and a Gemini sun, Pisces rising, libra moon–yes, I believe in it! I recently left the corporate fashion industry and turned my love for all things old into a full-time career as a vintage collector and shop owner. I think I might adopt a cat soon. 🙂

1. How would you describe your style?

I would describe my style as classic, feminine, and vintage with a touch of modern trend. I love puffy silhouettes and getting dressed up as much as possible 🙂

2. Who or what are your current biggest style inspirations?

My biggest style inspirations as of late are coming from old films and television series like Mad Men, Mrs. Maisel, and Dirty Dancing. I've even found myself pulling out sketch pads and trying to quickly draw different looks that the characters are wearing to use when I'm shopping or thrifting!

Amanda Halkias of Helen the Brand
Amanda Halkias of Helen the Brand

3. How did you discover your personal style or are you still discovering it?

I think I'll always be evolving my personal style with the way I evolve as a person. However, I think I've reached a point now where I am much more grounded in who I am and what I like that I will mostly refine my current style with age.

One thing I am working on is looking back and instead of cringing over things I used to wear–laughing it off and taking it as a necessary chapter in my evolution of self.... although I'm really glad I'm over my art school grunge phase ;')

4. What's on your thrift list right now?

Right now I am hunting for a woven leather sandal similar to the Row Gaia sandals from this season. I love a granola girl gone glam moment and these are such an easy item to get the look thrifted!

Amanda Halkias of Helen the Brand

5. Where would you go on your ultimate dream vacation?

My dream vacation is one where I retire for a few months to the small house my relatives own on the island of Nisyros in Greece where I would just live off the land, paint, cook, sew, sunbathe, drink wine and dance under the stars every night. Wait, why am I still here...

6. And the bonus question I like to ask everyone before they go: what's something you're really proud of right now?

Right now is a really difficult time to put into words for so many reasons, but I am taking this universal pause as a way to reconnect to the people and things that matter to me the most and to pour myself into my small business.

I am proud of myself for leaving a 9-5 job that didn't serve me and despite many many obstacles right now I am determined to succeed and I don't plan on giving up. Some call this a form of insanity, maybe they're right!
