WEAR IS... JAMIE ESPINO?

Jamie Espino is going places. Not only is her personality just as much fun as her whimsical style, but her bold spirit has her boldly entering into the world entrepreneurialism. At 25 Jamie is taking charge of her destiny by running her own online vintage store, Poorly Curated.

Jamie is filled with humor and inspiration so keep reading for her thoughts on selling vintage full time, fish-shaped bags and trivia.

Hi, ! Please introduce your wonderful self!

Hi, I'm Jamie! I'm a 25-year-old, vintage curator based in Arkansas... well, at least that's the job title I went with for my passport.

1. What was the inspiration behind starting Poorly Curated?

Well, I was in a post-grad ennui phase. Applying to jobs at companies that didn’t quite align with my beliefs, wondering how I could be in a creative career but mindful of the environment and labor practices, the whole bit. So I decided to sell vintage full time as a more sustainable alternative to being a photo editing assistant at a fast fashion company or something.

2. Can you tell us a little about what it's like running your own vintage store?

Sure, to start off I’m a one-person show. I source items, do laundry, photograph them, edit pics, post listings, and update social media. It requires a lot of self-motivation to stay on track and figure out what exactly I need to do each day. But it’s nice to have a flexible schedule because it allows me to choose my free time/travel.

I would say the best part is extending the life-span of garments, and making someone else happy while doing so. So many gems are already in circulation, so why waste new materials? The worst part is probably Instagram because it makes me feel like a vain little capitalist sometimes.

It’s really draining to see people tagging 20 brands on a picture of their face or having a serious, personal caption that ends with “btw 10% off @ _____”. That being said, it is great to connect with customers and other people that run vintage shops.

3. What are some of the best pieces you've sold in your shop?

It’s hard to say what’s “best” since [there are so many] different tastes and styles, y’know? But I think I like when I sell pieces that are 0% trendy. Like one time I found an insulated, sea bass-shaped bag. Also a chainlink apron.

4. How would you describe your personal style?

The formula I’ve figured out is clown on top + skate boy bottom half = fun and comfy. Lotsa high waisted pants and sneakers, but paired with an interesting shirt.

5. What's your current favorite item in your wardrobe and why?

Ooh, that’s a little tough but I’d have to say my 90s Jean Paul Gaultier long sleeve. It’s mesh and has an all-over print of Birth of Venus by Botticelli. I allow myself one designer investment piece per year and this was very worth it.

6. And the bonus question I like to ask everyone before they go: what's something you're really proud of right now?

I don’t think theres anything currently...pride is a very fleeting feeling... Oh! Our team got first place at trivia last week.

1. As an illustrator and designer, can you tell us a little about your creative process?

My creative process varies depending on the project but I usually start by doodling ideas! Although I mainly work digitally now but I still have to start by sketching out ideas.

2. What most inspires your work?

I get inspiration from anywhere and everywhere! Of course other designs and artists inspire me. I get most of my inspiration from things I see, whether that be food I’ve seen, plants on a walk or my friends interiors.

3. Your outfits are just as much fun as your creations! How would you describe your personal style?

I just try to have fun with my outfits. I love colour and textures so I’m instantly drawn to anything colourful or printed! I love combining different patterns and colours and pushing what’s usually considered to go together.

4. Who or what are your current biggest style inspirations?

I’m really into Scandinavian style at the minute and their use of patterns and pastel palettes! My biggest style inspirations are probably Megan Ellaby, Marianne Theodorsen and Marie Wibe Jedig.

Hi! Welcome back to Wear is She Wednesdays, a series that highlights one special girl each week to let her shine! WEAR IS... FREJA SETTERGREN?

Okay. I'm not afraid to say it. Freja Settergren is the ultimate cool girl. Perhaps it's the mixture of her experiences in both Stockholm and Paris that have infused such a glorious sense of personal style into her. Or perhaps, she was born with it. Who's to say?

All we know for sure is that this girl is Spring personified. In a swirl of earthy greens, baby pinks and sunshine yellows, Freja is certainly making the world her runway. So keep reading for her thoughts on Scandi style, wardrobe staples and Dior.

Hi, Freja! Please introduce your wonderful self!

Hi! My name is Freja and I'm a 21 year old Swede living in Paris. I grew up in Stockholm with my parents, two brothers and a sister. Paris always held a special place in my heart, I visited quite often since my dad worked in Paris sometimes. I decided I was gonna live here when I was 12 and so after high school I moved with my best friend and now we live happily ever after in the cutest studio in Montmartre.

1. How would you describe your style?

I'll borrow my friend Justine's words: "Un mix merveille between Scandi allure and Parisian chic." My style is pretty fluid, on one day I'll feel like wearing a cute dress and the next day I'll wear a hoodie and jeans.

2. Who or what are your current biggest style inspirations?

I get very inspired by cities and the people in it. Like when I'm in Stockholm I think my style gets less parisian, and the other way around. Otherwise girls that inspire me are Ella Karberg, Marie Jedig, Naomi Anwer, and Camille Charriere.

3. How did you discover your personal style or are you still discovering it?

I think I'm still discovering it, but I guess I know better now what clothes makes me feel and look good, like I have my stables (high waisted flare pants, t-shirts, polos, transparent shirts) and I won't go to far away from that although I have some pieces that sticks out more. I really like mixing sporty and cute. If I wear a hoodie I'll probably add some cute hair accessories or my mini pink bag. If I wear a skirt or a dress I absolutely won't wear heels, I would feel to girly.

4. What's on your thrift list right now?

A fun pair of sunglasses, a Dior by Galliano T-shirt à la 2000's and maybe a jacket for spring.

colorful Paris apartment
mismatched plates

5. Where would you go on your ultimate dream vacation?

To me, France and Italy has it all and you don't need to go to far for it. The food, the culture, the landscape and the people.

6. And the bonus question I like to ask everyone before they go: what's something you're really proud of right now?

Juggling a part time job, an internship, studies and a social life all at once. I do not recommend it to anyone though, your health takes the punch haha.

Wear is… Alissa Mezzetti

Hi! Welcome back to Wear is She Wednesdays, a series that highlights one special girl each week to let her shine! Every Wednesday, we feature a different “she,” and get the scoop on her style, what makes her tick, and how the heck we can learn to be as awesome as she is. Today we’re asking the question everyone wants to know… Wear is Alissa Mezzetti?

WEAR IS... ALISSA MEZZETTI?

If anyone can time travel, it's definitely Alissa Mezzetti. Between her shaggy bangs and vintage wardrobe, she wears the 70s so well you'd almost believe her if she told you she somehow got lost in the time-space continuum. While she draws inspiration from some of the great rock n' roll artists of the past, she often ends up looking even cooler than them.

So if you love vintage style, prepare yourself for a world of inspiration today. Keep reading for her thoughts on Diane Keaton, men's fashion and the Northern Lights.

1. How would you describe your style?

My style is definitely inspired by the 70s. Sometimes I’m more bohemian but I often tap into my love of 70s rock n' roll and play off of that.

2. Who or what are your current biggest style inspirations?

The 70s is my biggest inspiration. I love looking at old photos of Diane Keaton from that time period. She was so cool and effortless and natural. I love how women owned their natural beauty back then.

I’ve been insanely inspired by menswear lately. Specifically everything Gucci puts on Harry Styles. It’s honestly all so dope and reminiscent of how men dressed in the 79s. I need more men’s pieces in my life.

I watch a lot of old film and get inspiration from that as well.

3. How did you discover your personal style or are you still discovering it?

I've been obsessed with the 70s since I was a kid. My mother once called me her little flower child. I like experimenting with different looks and my style is constantly evolving. I moved to LA for a few years from Boston and that definitely helped open me up to trying new things and coming into my own. I feel more confident in my looks than ever but I’ll never stop evolving my style!

4. What's on your thrift list right now?

I need more trousers in my life! Have been trying stuff on at various vintage stores around Brooklyn but haven’t found anything I’m completely in love with yet.

5. Where would you go on your ultimate dream vacation?

Ultimate dream vacation? My biggest dream is to see the northern lights! Hopefully I can save some money and do that this year! I want to start in Iceland and travel down to Norway then finish in Copenhagen!

6. And the bonus question I like to ask everyone before they go: what's something you're really proud of right now?

I’m proud of so many things. I just moved back east from LA on a whim. I honestly hated LA. I got laid off from my job and booked a one way ticket to NYC. Came here with no job or apartment but I'm making it work! I’m a bit of a nomad and am proud I’m able to uproot my life and thrive even though it’s terrifying.

Where else can we find you, Alissa?

I don’t have a website (yet!) so you’ll only find me on instagram (@alissamezzetti). I joined TikTok for a second but deleted it, maybe I’ll bring it back. Who knows!

Wear is… Nikita Jackson

Hi! Welcome back to Wear is She Wednesdays, a series that highlights one special girl each week to let her shine! Every Wednesday, we feature a different “she,” and get the scoop on her style, what makes her tick, and how the heck we can learn to be as awesome as she is. WEAR IS... NIKITA JACKSON?

Between her glowing complexion and whimsical wardrobe, Nikita Jackson might just be an actual fairy. This British beauty blends together Parisian and Scandinavian influences to create a style all her own. Her closet is filled with earthy colors, quirky Peter Pan collars and flirty dresses, making her perhaps the chic-est Science teacher on the planet. Keep reading for her thoughts on patterned tights, seasonal dressing and Queen.

Hi, Nikita! Please introduce your wonderful self!

Hi, I’m Nikita and I’m a 23 year old science teacher with a love for sustainability. I’m from the North-West of England, near Manchester, and have lived in the surrounding areas my whole life. After college I had to choose between science and art for my career, so my Instagram let’s me stay creative!

1. How would you describe your style in 3 words?

I’d describe my style as seasonal. It’s ever changing and I definitely take my cues from the weather and my day to day life. I’d also say it’s quite playful and a mixture of Parisian (for autumn/winter) and Scandinavian (for spring/summer)!

2. Who or what are your current biggest style inspirations?

I take a lot of inspiration from Instagram and Pinterest. I’ll scroll until I find something I like and then I’ll look for similar items on Depop and in charity shops. I haven’t bought an item of clothing new since July 1st 2019.

3. What does personal style mean to you?

Personal style is the ability to express yourself and feel comfortable and confident with your outfit. People make snapshot judgements on the way you look before they get to know you, so personal style is important to give off your own message!

4. What's on your thrift list right now?

My thrift list is currently:

Patterned tights

Anything with an oversized collar

Green dresses

5. Who would you invite to your fantasy dinner party?

I think I’d want my fantasy dinner party to host Queen, Prince, Stevie Nicks, Zooey Deschanel, Dakota Fanning and my boyfriend. A mixed bunch but all very interesting!

6. And the bonus question I like to ask everyone before they go: what's something you're really proud of right now?

I’m currently really proud of myself for falling back in love with hobbies. It seems so small, but just getting yourself out and doing something you enjoy makes you feel 1000% better. I’m currently loving pottery and want to start punch needling!
