Wear is… Micaela Cali?

Hi! Welcome back to Wear is She Wednesdays, a series that highlights one special girl each week to let her shine! Every Wednesday, we feature a different “she,” and get the scoop on her style, what makes her tick, and how the heck we can learn to be as awesome as she is. Today we’re asking the question everyone wants to know… Wear is Micaela Cali?

WEAR IS… MICAELA CALI?

Micaela Cali is the type of girl you want to chat with over tea and biscuits, provided she likes them of course… (Do you like tea and/or biscuits? Let’s set something up.) Her soul is bursting with creativity and perhaps sweeter than the baked goods she decorates. From pastry arts to photography, it would seem that everything she does is steeped in imagination.

Her interview today is not only thoughtful, but delightfully warm so keep reading for her thoughts on style in film, writing challenges and embarking on her style journey.

Hi Micaela! Please introduce your wonderful self!

Hello friends! My name is Micaela Cali and I’m 25 years old, currently living just outside Toronto, in Milton, Ontario, Canada! I’m a freelance portrait photographer and cookie decorator at a little sugar cookie shop in town. In my free time I love writing, reading, watching movies and of course thrifting! I shoot mainly portraits but I especially love fashion photography and taking self portraits of my own clothing finds when I can!

1. How would you describe your style?

When I first read this question I was originally stumped, until my roommate jumped to my rescue with the word “eclectic!” Which means “deriving ideas, style, or taste from a broad and diverse range of sources.” I think my style is a combination of many different things, and I definitely dress to feeling or whatever I’m inspired by that week. Sometimes I dress more simple and feminine, and other days I’m obsessed with whimsical and quirky florals, textures and patterns, and layering them all together!

2. Who or what are your current biggest style inspirations?

I’m usually heavily inspired by the fashion from my favourite movies and tv shows, and that’s such an important part of film to me. Recently I loved everything Lucy Hale wore in CW’s Katy Keene, Grace Vanderwaal in Disney’s Stargirl and Lana Condor in Netflix’s To All The Boys I Loved Before. I live for the fashion in editorial shoots with my favourite celebrities (like Taylor Swift, Emma Robert, Lily Collins) in good old fashion magazines too! It might be a bit of a strange pairing, but I’m always inspired by both the Victorian and the 80’s to early 2000’s eras.

Things like Anne with and E, Pride & Prejudice, The Baby Sitter’s Club (1995) and The Sisterhood of the Travelling Pants make me so excited about fashion and becoming a character that’s still true to myself and personality when I pick out what to wear each day. And then there are obviously a ton of Youtubers and Instagrammers I love to follow for inspiration! A few to mention would be Ashely from Best Dressed (@best.dressed), Diana Chamomile (@dianachamomile), Kate from @readwritethrift, Kelly Havens Stickle (@kellyhavensohio) and of course yourself Veronica! (and I’m totally not just saying that!!)

3. How did you discover your personal style or are you still discovering it?

It’s kind of embarrassing, but the first time I started to truly find my style was in high school when my mom took me to the first Forever 21 near us that had opened about an hour away. I felt like I had never been to a store that offered so many different kind of styles in one place I had never seen before, and I remember floating from section to section thinking I could be anyone or anything I wanted to be in these clothes, as cheesy as that sounds!

Obviously years later I learned about the negative effects of fast fashion and my passion for thrifting grew! Only ironically after many years of being dragged into Goodwill by my mom as a child and hating it! But I still have a handful of pieces from those first F21 trips that I will always cherish as the beginning of my style journey!

4. What’s on your thrift list right now?

Am I a huge thrift nerd for keeping this list on my phone at all times? My top ones right now are: 1) A white button up blouse, super basic but I somehow haven’t been able to find the perfect one! 2) High waisted overalls, I am a long-torsoed girl and finding jumpsuit things that fit is hard! 3) A fun patterned 2 piece set! 4) Doc Martens, I don’t own a pair yet but I’m determined to thrift my first!

5. Where would you do on your ultimate dream vacation?

Right now honestly anywhere in Europe because I’ve never been over the pond! I could probably tell you 10+ countries around there I want to travel to for different reasons, but I do have my heart set on England and France! Old buildings and architecture fascinate me to the core and I’ve been brushing up on my french during quarantine! (Okay and maybe Greece if I’m feeling beachy!)

6. And the bonus question I like to ask everyone before they go: what’s something you’re really proud of right now?

That’s a hard one! The last two years I’ve participated in a little writing challenge on Instagram called Escapril, where you write with prepared prompts every day for the whole month of April and post them. Even after that I’ve begun to share a lot of my writing and poetry on Instagram in my captions and stories, which has been both scary and therapeutic haha!

Kind of like when I first got into fashion and would get nervous about wearing unique pieces back in college! I’m proud of myself for continuing to reach that type of confidence and vulnerability in certain areas of my life.

Where else can we find you, Micaela?

You can find me at my personal instagram @mic_cali, my new style & thrift account @caela.thrifts or my portrait photography account @cali_captures! And thank you so much for having me, it’s been a pleasure and honour!

Wear is… A’Tavia Tatiana?

Hi! Welcome back to Wear is She Wednesdays, a series that highlights one special girl each week to let her shine! Every Wednesday, we feature a different “she,” and get the scoop on her style, what makes her tick, and how the heck we can learn to be as awesome as she is. Today we’re asking the question everyone wants to know… Wear is A’Tavia Tatiana?

WEAR IS… A’TAVIA TATIANA?

Amidst so much uncertainty, A’Tavia Tatiana is the kind of confident power woman we need these days. From California to Paris, she’s taking the world by storm and making up her own rules as she goes along. A’Tavia not only creates one Cali-casual-meets-French-girl-chic outfit after another (seriously, can we steal your wardrobe? Please and thanks.), more importantly, she’s creating space for everyone to go beyond societal norms and declare beauty for themselves.

So if  you’re ready to meet your new favorite style icon, keep reading for A’Tavia’s thoughts on fruit earrings, pinstripe trousers and life in Paris.

Hi A’Tavia! Please introduce your wonderful self!

My name is A’Tavia, or A’Tavia Tatiana, comme tu veux (as you want). I am a digital creator living as an ex-pat in Paris. Originally from Los Angeles but after I decided the acting world was way too close-minded, I decided to create my own content in a place I love.

1. How would you describe your style in 3 words?

My style in three words – bold, airy, freedom.

2. Who or what are your current biggest style inspirations?

Right now, I love @stylejelly, @jeannedamas, @misslionhunter, @museuniform, if I could explain my style it would be somewhere between the colliding worlds of those women. I am a big fan of color and they all mesh it so effortlessly. Also, Rihanna, Zendaya, and Tracee Ellis Ross are always on my list.

3. What does personal style mean to you?

Where I am in life right now, I don’t think I have a personal style. Since committing to slow fashion, my style has been all over the place! I’m really just going with the flow. Sometimes I just feel like that kid who’s parents’ let them dress themselves. Not a lot makes sense, and truly it’s a little tacky, haha. I’m also plus size, so without fast fashion, I have no cohesive style… and I like it.

4. What’s on your thrift list right now?

A great pair of pinstripe trousers! I have this look I’ve been wanting to create for literally years, but I have yet to find the pants. Also mom jeans, maybe dad jeans. PANTS! I don’t have much success when it comes to thrifting bottoms in my size so I’m always on the lookout.

5. Who would you invite to your fantasy dinner party?

Tyler, the creator, because I adore his use of color. He’s been my husband for years and he doesn’t know it. An artist and fellow Paris ex-pat @_purple_palace. She wears these really cool fruit earrings that she makes, and her style just exudes freedom to me. Zendaya and @misslionhunter. If I could somehow invite just the fashion of Carrie Bradshaw without the Sex and the City drama, that would also be great hahaha.

6. And the bonus question I like to ask everyone before they go: what’s something you’re really proud of right now?

I’m launching my own plus-size vintage store very soon! @wapsvintage on Instagram. It’s always been an idea tickling the back of my head, now I’ve taken the time to make it a reality.

Where else can we find you, A’Tavia?

Yes!! My Youtube channel is A’Tavia Tatiana. I make videos about my life in Paris, thrifting, travel and so much more. So many of the blogs show only one side of everything, I show it all. I also have a blog, where I share my travels and fashion too https://ataviatatiana.com/, also of course on Instagram: @ataviatatiana

Wear is… Jennifer Scott?

Hi! Welcome back to Wear is She Wednesdays, a series that highlights one special girl each week to let her shine! WEAR IS… JENNIFER SCOTT?

Janis Joplin style sunglasses. A bib inspired blouse. A pair of well loved painter’s pants. These are just a handful of the gems you’ll find in Jennifer Scott’s wardrobe. As a woman unafraid to mix careers, she similarly, (and expertly), blends a variety of clothing styles into one killer look all her own.

However, don’t stop at falling for her eclectic outfits or her breezy haircut or her interior design skills. There’s so much about her to be inspired by, so keep reading for her thoughts on Copenhagen fashion week, cowhide clogs and Reiki.

Hi Jennifer! Please introduce your wonderful self!

Hello! My name is Jennifer Scott, however I go by Jenn! I am a Michigan native, yet found myself here in KC about 6 years ago.  I went to school for interior design in both Chicago and Grand Rapids but dropped out and started working for an architecture firm instead. Most of my working career has been spent in the design, fashion,  retail or restaurant world. Currently, I work for an outdoor furniture company called Yardbird full time, but I do freelance work as an editorial  & commercial wardrobe stylist also.

1. How would you describe your style?

I like to think my style is effortless and approachable, but also a bit ethereal and feminine. I am drawn to outfits that feel easy and somewhat unexpected, ie: pairing feminine prairie with utilitarian or military. and I am a neutrals girl through and through …no bold and bright here!!

2. Who or what are your current biggest style inspirations?

I will never tire of looking to the Olsen’s  or Copenhagen fashion week street style for ideas. And then of course Instagram, which is an endless supply of inspiration right at our fingertips (and too many accounts to name). I love following along with Reese & Molly Blutstein (@accidentalinfluencer , @double3xposure) and Elizabeth Cardinal (@elizcardinal) specifically when I need to think outside the box.

3. How did you discover your personal style or are you still discovering it?

I think our personal style is ever-evolving!  I do believe the older I get, the more developed my style has become. My 30’s especially have been about consciously choosing clothing and doing so in a way that feels entirely and authentically me. I think that is most important to remember, no matter what you call “personal style.”

4. What’s on your thrift list right now?

Cream or white overalls, a knit midi skirt, cowhide clogs, antique Edwardian and Victorian pieces, white cowboy boots, midi dresses in cotton or linen, gingham anything, 2 piece sets, vintage fabrics and antique quilts.

5. Where would you do on your ultimate dream vacation?

Too many places on that list but I have wanted to go to Spain and Portugal for the longest time, since high school. I think that is where I would go first!

6. And the bonus question I like to ask everyone before they go: what’s something you’re really proud of right now?

To be honest,  I’m kind of in the midst of a rather exponential “growth period” so subsequently I feel like I’m experiencing a lot of self-doubt and insecurity. But in light of that,  I am proud of myself for recognizing where I’m and allowing myself to live in the “uncomfortable” for the time being.

And on a lighter note , I am excited to disclose that I’m opening up my availability to take on more personalized styling projects. My work has always been on the editorial / commercial side, but I have had a lot of requests from individuals requesting my help. I’m looking forward to being able to give more time and attention there, and I hope to be able to watch it flourish!

WEAR IS… NATALIE GRAY?

Natalie Gray does it all. Somehow between balancing a new Youtube channel and blog,  advocating for mental health and pursuing a bright future in marketing, she still finds time to curate a fabulous wardrobe. Her breezy personal style is the type to remind us of the beauty in classic simplicity, and her Instagram is a collection of the stuff your most Pinteresty dreams are made of.

So keep reading for Natalie’s thoughts on Lizzie McGuire, worn in jeans and creative outlets in a time of uncertainty.

Hi Natalie! Please introduce your wonderful self!

My name is Natalie Gray, I have experience in marketing and communications and am currently looking for a job in marketing as I build my platform on Instagram (and now YouTube)!

1. How would you describe your style in 3 words?

Minimal, neutral, classic.

2. Who or what are your current biggest style inspirations?

I have no one specifically, but definitely a lot of the people I follow on Instagram. I’m really attracted to over-sized items, structured items, neutrals, classic pieces, and chunky gold jewelry. I tend to stay away from trendier items as I want to collect pieces that will last for several seasons.

3. What does personal style mean to you?

Personal style means everything to me. I love being able to be inspired by everything around me, everything I consume. My style has definitely changed as I’ve gotten older, as well as my viewpoint on fashion as a whole. My goal right now is to buy less pieces and focus on expanding my closet with more intentional, timeless and sustainable pieces.

While avoiding fast fashion entirely is my ultimate goal, I recognize how much of a privilege it is to do so. I think making baby steps is super important – like learning tips about thrifting, educating yourself about the impacts of fast fashion on the environment and workers, and honestly realizing that buying less and outfit repeating is 100% okay (be like Lizzie McGuire)!

4. What’s on your thrift list right now?

I haven’t been thrifting for a long time due to the virus, but once I’m comfortable going back, I definitely am looking for some worn-in jeans, dresses and oversized tees.

5. Who would you invite to your fantasy dinner party?

Victoria Pedretti, Laura Harrier, Orion Carloto, Zendaya, Jenn Im & Zoey Deutch!

6. And the bonus question I like to ask everyone before they go: what’s something you’re really proud of right now?

Something I am really proud of right now is my resilience. I am proud of myself that I’m continuing to use my voice by helping educate people on important social and environmental issues that are occuring, along with advocating for mental health awareness during this time (and always)!

It’s so important for people to listen to their bodies, take a break if they need to. With the state of the world, it seems trivial sometimes to care about fashion and beauty, but it’s still important to have a creative outlet even with all of this uncertainty. Finding balance is key!

Where else can we find you, Natalie?

I am launching my YouTube channel this week actually! My channel is self titled, just “Natalie Gray”. I also have a blog that I am currently re-branding but I am super excited to post more regularly on it soon which is bynataliegray.com. Since I’ve grown quite a bit recently, I am excited for these new avenues of creativity and continue using my voice to promote the things I’m passionate about!

WEAR IS… MAGGIE J?

Meet Maggie, a digital creator, world traveler and baguette bag rocker. Her whimsical sense of style is enough to make you swoon, but sweeter than her endless stream of candy colored clothes is the girl wearing them. Between her flawless wardrobe, open heart and laid-back personality, she’s the type of girl you’re almost jealous of until you realize she’s the nicest and instead decide you should just be internet bffs.

Maggie is an absolute joy to get to know, so keep reading for her thoughts on following your passion, leather shackets and New Zealand thrift culture.

Hi Maggie! Please introduce your wonderful self!

Hi guys! I’m Maggie, my friends call me Mags. A lot of people when they first meet
me joke that I have the same name as this brand of instant noodles –Maggi but hey!
My name has an extra ‘e’ at the end.

I’m currently in my final year of architecture and writing my thesis. I’m based in
Auckland, New Zealand at the moment, but I call Singapore my home. 

1. How would you describe your personal style?

I would say my style is somewhat retro vintage and comfy street. I could never
describe my style precisely because it feels like it’s a blend of everything, but if I had
to choose some keywords, it would be 90s, vintage, street wear, indie (I love me
some plaid pants and oversized sweaters). I prioritize my comfort above all else, so
my “style” is pretty much me trying to balance looking cute but staying comfortable
100% of the time.

2. Who or what are your current biggest style inspirations?

So many people from Instagram and Tik Tok currently! Ever since I started my
fashion account, I get so much inspiration from the people in the fashion community
on Instagram. Some of my go-to for inspo are:

@ __mmaxinewylde

@natashamedx

@peacecrusade

@thenxcvintage

@loorosemary (who has been interviewed here
too).

I never thought I would get fashion inspo from Tik Tok but there’s actually so
much amazing content there! My faves are @tzeshinn, @the.navarose,
@sarahmtimet, @ambikadhr. Of course, @bestdressed is a forever style inspo.

3. How did you discover your personal style or are you still discovering it?

I only really started to be interested in fashion in my late teens. I had to wear school
uniforms Monday to Friday back in high school, and any time outside of school was
meant for studying (being the good Asian kid that I am) and co-curricular activities,
so fashion was never really on my mind. A lot of my early style inspirations came
from watching Youtubers such as clothesencounters (Jenn Im), tothe9s (Ricci and
Cassie), TheLineUp, IAMKARENO. I loved watching their styling videos and I pretty
much learnt all I knew about fashion then from them.

Being at University, and surrounded by creative minds in my major definitely helped
me to step out of my comfort zone after high school. I’m constantly admiring what the people around me wear and how fearlessly bold they are in expressing themselves.

The thrifting culture here in New Zealand also pushes me to experiment with styles
more. There’s not many international labels here compared to other countries, but
the availability of op-shops and the fact that I’m a broke college student means
thrifting is great for experimenting!

My style is still evolving (and I’m sure most people’s do) and so I’m definitely still
discovering new things I like. Just this year, I’ve really gotten into wearing more colours, whilst in the past I pretty much only wore black, whites, and yellow-brown tones.

4. What’s on your thrift list right now?

A leather shacket, a cute bucket hat (I used to hate them!) and shoulder bags –I
have so many but never enough.

melodramaggie

5. What’s your go to midnight snack?

I would sneak out of bed and cook myself some Shin Ramen (yummy spicy Korean
instant noodle) and a soft-boiled egg if I’m feeling extra hungry –which coincidentally
is what I’m feeling right now.

6. And the bonus question I like to ask everyone before they go: what’s something you’re really proud of right now?

Being asked to be interviewed for this blog (thanks Veronica)! And starting my fashion content Instagram @melodramaggie. I’ve been deliberating for YEARS whether to start an account or not, mostly because I was worried about what my friends and family might think.

But this whole pandemic really put things into perspective for me, and I thought to myself, “if not now, when?”. So if you’re reading this and wanting to start something you’re passionate about – JUST DO IT. There’s no better time than now.

Where else can we find you, Maggie?

@melodramaggie on Instagram is where I’m at right now, I want to look into starting a blog / online thrift store because I love collecting vintage pieces (but not
necessarily wearing them myself –ya feel?) So follow me on Instagram and stay
tuned!
